The 68RFE transmission does more than just show up in the constantly changing language of powertrain architecture; it makes an impression, leaving a lasting echo rather than a passing whisper in the sacred halls of diesel torque mastery. This gearbox, which Chrysler debuted in 2007, was a completely new invention that was painstakingly designed to control the powerful output of the 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engine rather than a retrofit of an older one. A gearbox that could achieve that elusive balance became more than just a luxury as torque ratings soared into the 800 lb-ft range and customer demands required both mechanical dexterity and sheer strength.
